Ebook About The hidden costs of artificial intelligence, from natural resources and labor to privacy, equality, and freedom“Eloquent, clear and profound—this volume is a classic for our times. It draws our attention away from the bright shiny objects of the new colonialism through elucidating the social, material and political dimensions of Artificial Intelligence.”—Geoffrey C. Bowker, University of California, IrvineWhat happens when artificial intelligence saturates political life and depletes the planet? How is AI shaping our understanding of ourselves and our societies? In this book Kate Crawford reveals how this planetary network is fueling a shift toward undemocratic governance and increased racial, gender, and economic inequality. Drawing on more than a decade of research, award-winning science, and technology, Crawford reveals how AI is a technology of extraction: from the energy and minerals needed to build and sustain its infrastructure, to the exploited workers behind “automated” services, to the data AI collects from us.Rather than taking a narrow focus on code and algorithms, Crawford offers us a political and a material perspective on what it takes to make artificial intelligence and where it goes wrong. While technical systems present a veneer of objectivity, they are always systems of power. This is an urgent account of what is at stake as technology companies use artificial intelligence to reshape the world.Book Atlas of AI: Power, Politics, and the Planetary Costs of Artificial Intelligence Review :
That the author is center stage, like they're giving a TED talk? Is this simply a reflection of the ego-centric, self-promoting narcissism of the 21st century? Is this what Hunter Thompson and Tom Wolfe and the NEw Journalism school hath wrought? Does the author, of the editor, believe this make the narrative warmer, more personal, like bringing the writer into my den for a 'chat?' I have started a series of recently published books lately, wherein the author makes his or her probings and possessions the center point of the 'stories' in what I had hoped would be rigorously researched, dispassionate writing. This almost comes off as a what I did on my summer vacation between 5th and 6th grade, albeit from an Ivy League professor with too many irons in the fire. Which leads me to the other point, how can these mega-star professors, who are flying to Davos and Beijing, who are advising heads of government and Silicon Valley titans, possibly have the time to research and reflect and write a truly ground breaking work. To paraphrase Samuel Johnson, a book written without effort is seldom read with pleasure. Have you noticed, for example, that in so many of these hefty tomes, the ideas and insights, and the relevant evidence and data, could be distilled down a wee bit? In many volumes, I've got the gist of the argument after the Introductory and the First Chapter, and the rest is tedious and needless, indicating importance, whether for the tenure from university or for the advance from the publisher, is based on word count rather than substance. Anyways, I'll be curious what others reviewers think. This “atlas” maps what is often forgotten when discussing AI: material needs like the extraction of lithium and other minerals from the earth with the destruction of nature that requires and the workers, as well as the epistemological constraints of classification and the false proxies of data. The book is engagingly written and easy to follow while richly sourced. I’ll probably assign at least a couple of chapters to undergrads in our digital culture program. I would have loved an audio book version - but I listened to it using automatic text to speech on my phone and it was surprisingly not awful. This is the first time I’ve done that with a whole book.
